“No way!” My head tilted back as laughter erupted from my body.

“Yes! They didn’t realize the mic was on. So, almost everyone heard it.” Liam’s voice was laced with hysteria as he told me what happened at his firm today.

“I can’t believe they didn’t think to check that before engaging in that.” I shook my head with pity, thinking about his poor coworkers hitting the mic while having sex in their office.

“Sometimes the passion can sweep you up and you’re at the other persons’ disposal not caring about your surroundings. It is Valentine’s Day,” he replied with a chuckle. “Can’t really blame them.”

“I suppose so. I can’t remember being so immersed with a passion like that. I guess I can’t relate. Speaking of Valentine’s Day, you didn’t have to spend it with me. If you wanted to spend it with someone else, I wouldn’t have been upset.” I placed my hand over his as we sat on my couch.

He blinked at my statement and grabbed my chin between his fingers. “Bella, I want to spend today with you.”

I gulped. A shock of desire coursed through my body at his touch, his gaze, his words...

I was caught off guard by how I was feeling. My eyes fluttered closed, and I found myself pleading for his touch. I could hear my heart pumping blood through my body. My throat went dry, and my hands were clammy.

“Good.” My voice was laced with desire before I straightened up and shook my head of the attraction I felt just moments before.

I hadn’t felt such a suffocating need for someone before, never with Beckett, never with anyone. Liam was different. He did things to me that I didn’t quite understand. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. I knew I shouldn’t have feelings for him; he was my ex-fiancé’s best friend.

His face fell as I pulled away, but he recovered with a carefree smile. “Did your clients like all the photos from the Valentine’s Day sessions?”

“Yes, they did. Themed sessions are always a blast. Thanks for helping me set it up.”

“I’d do just about anything for you.” His words sounded like they held an underlying meaning, but I locked it in the back of mind, afraid to open it.

“The feeling’s mutual,” I mumbled under my breath.

“I was thinking about getting a pet.” He glanced at me.

“I love pets! I’ve always wanted a puppy, but I was never allowed. You should definitely get a pet. Any pet would be awesome!” I waved my hands in excitement.

My dad was allergic to dogs, and my mom was allergic to cats. I was never able to get a pet other than a fish growing up. Beckett hated animals, so I wasn’t allowed to have any when I lived with him either. I had always wanted a puppy that could be my companion. I never really had any friends; a pet was a way to fill the void. Though, I was never able to get one.

Liam laughed. “A puppy sounds awesome.
